Skua 1, meteorological rocket 

The UK Meteorological Office was authorized in 1959 to commission a programme for a rocket to be used for atmospheric research  up to an altitude of 50 miles (80 km). Skua was a solid-fuel rocket created by Bristol Aerojet Ltd in collaboration with RPE of Wescott.  The rocket measured some 7.24 feet in length (2.24 m) with a diameter 5 inches (12.7 cm), weighing 81 Ibs (36.7kg) and was launched from a 16 foot long (5 m) tube. The first flight of Skua took place in 1962 from South Uist in the Hebrides Archipelago. The rocket flew over 900 missions in all, from six different countries involving some eleven launch sites.
